FREEDOM by Katherine Carey-Place 1878-1934

I want to live my life, all that I am or ever hope to be,
To do just what I want to do, no shackle tied to me.
I want to live my very best, to help my brothers too,
But he to be free, (as I wish to be) and do what he cares to do.

Each to plan his life, or her life, as it might be,
Each to strive for the goal they have set, but each to be free.
For the world is wide and lofty, by this we must surely know,
That the sun and air God freely gives, means our souls must have space to grow.

For a life that is hampered and burdened, always groping for the light,
Like the rose that blooms in a shady spot cannot blossom half so bright.
So give me freedom of thought and will, I care not for the rest,
Then like the rose that blooms in the sunniest place, my soul will grow its best.
