Wayfaring Stranger

Wayfaring Stranger

One of my favorite songs, Wayfaring Stranger was first published in 1858. It has been covered and covered well by so many different artists. It still sends chills down my back when I think of the ladies in the choir singing this a cappella.

It touches me because of the hope that is in the song. Life may be hard and tough, but a better world awaits, along with blessed reunions.

These are the lyrics to the Johnny Cash version of it:

I'm just a poor wayfaring stranger
Traveling through this world below
There's no sickness, no toil or danger
In that bright land to which I go

I'm going there to see my father
And all my loved ones, who've gone on
I'm just going over Jordan
I'm just going over home

I know dark clouds will gather 'round me
I know my way is hard and steep
Yet beauteous fields arise before me
Where God's redeemed their vigils keep

I'm going there to see my mother
She said she'd meet me when I come
So I’m just going over Jordan
I'm just going over home
I'm just going over Jordan
I'm just going over home
