
Mt Morris Cemetery Located a few blocks west of Mt Morris, Michigan on Mt Morris Road is this older cemetery that is still in use. There are close to 3,00 burials here with the oldest being from 1837. There is a large number of civil war veterans buried here. The cemetery contains a large fenced plot for the Giberson family. William (1806 – 1882) was a hotelier in Genesee County and his son John (1848-1898) became Prosecuting Attorney of Lake County. The most notable of the burials here is, Corporal George W. Clute (1842 – 1919). His bio by RPD2 reads, “Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served during the Civil War as a Corporal in Company I, 14th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Bentonville, North Carolina on March 19, 1865. His citation reads "In a charge, captured the flag of the 40th North Carolina (C.S.A.), the flag being taken in a personal encounter with an officer who carried and defended it".
