The Edmonds Residence

The Edmonds Residence

My mother was born in 1933 in Jermyn, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania. Around 1937-1938, the family moved to Genesee County, Michigan.

They rented a trailer in a trailer park on Davison Road in what is today’s Burton City. Mother attended kindergarten at Kearlsey Schools. Grandfather bought a lot at 1301 North Cornell Street in the Beecher district. They continued to live in the trailer while he built the basement for their new home.

Once the basement was completed the family moved there and lived in it while the rest of the house was completed.

The area, now crowded and built up, was at that time, mostly without homes. Grandfather and the uncles would hunt out the back door. There are pictures of the kitchen where every available surface is covered in dead game. Rabbits, pheasants and partridge.

It was a yellow, four-bedroom, one bath, two story house. The first floor included a kitchen, dining room and living room. There was a small garage on the back of the lot with a kennel behind it for hunting dogs. Near the hose was a small patio area, sitting on it was a circular concrete picnic table.

By the time I came along (1960’s), the area was in decline and is today considered somewhat of a ghetto.
