Gil Elvgren – Painter

For whimsical, intense Pinup portraits, the master is Gil Elvgren. His work adds a sense of wholesomeness to the model. His depictions of the female form are fantastic.

Gillette A. Elvgren (March 15, 1914 – February 29, 1980) was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago.

His work the publishing company, Louis F. Dow, helped to set his place in the industry and many of his imaged graced the nose cone of WWII fighter planes.

Around 1944, he went to work for Brown and Bigelow, a company that made calendars and other advertising items. He went on to work for major corporations and popular magazines.

He passed away from cancer at his Siesta Key, Florida home. He is buried in Sarasota Memorial Park, Sarasota, Sarasota County, Florida, USA
